About the Work:
The two contrasting movements of this sonata depict growth on a cosmic scale, each in its own way. The first depicts the radiance and colourfulness of stellar nebulae, with resonant expansive chord sonorities and long drawn-out melodic lines. This eventually dissipates into nothingness, before launching into the ‘moto perpetuo’ of the second movement. This is begun by fast rising and falling gestures emerging from the cello’s lowest note. These gestures return at various points in the movement, which grows towards 'infinity'. In writing this work, I am indebted to the cello works of various composers including: Britten, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Connesson.
